It is everything you need to find, craft and tell your own personal stories.
Do you admire other people’s stories? Love recounting their adventures, their lessons learned, their adversity overcome?
I do
For years I have excitedly shared other people’s inspiring stories (that I’d heard in person, on podcasts, or on-line)
I had no trouble entertaining my friends and family with these (like most of us, I can tell a good yarn) but they were never quite as impressed as I had been, and although the stories of courage, adventure or adversity stayed with me, for them it was quickly forgotten.
Why was that?
Because it wasn’t my story I was telling them. It was about something happening to someone they didn’t know and would never meet and therefore they didn’t really care that much about.
In short, it wasn’t personal.
It cost me nothing to share someone else’s journey of trials and triumph, and was risk-free to me.
Then I started telling my own personal true stories and everything changed.
Why? Because the only stories that can really connect us to each other are our own personal ones.
True stories, told from that fragile, shaky, honest part of ourselves, require not only vunerability but courage.
So why would we put ourselves through that if we couldn’t see a clear benefit?
Connection starts with honesty and vulnerability.
Because when you share a truth about yourself from a real and vulnerable place, other people will instantly relate to you and your humanity and they will remember both you and your story better.
“But my life isn’t impressive or storyworthy..”
You’ll never know until you try.
Have you ever thought that your life, your experiences, your thoughts and achievements could inspire someone else?
I never did.
Not until I started telling my OWN stories and people were kind enough to let me know how much they helped them.
So What’s the First Step?
It’s recognising that your seemingly ’normal’ life might contain something that could be of value to someone else. You might need to quieten your own inner critic in order to take an honest look at your life and see value in ALL your experiences.
The Second Step
It’s keeping a record of those memories, those significant /impactful moments in your life that could be worth sharing. And doing this for 10 minutes every day.
The Third Step
Learning how to share those moments in stories that are interesting, compelling and entertaining so other people will not only want to listen, they will remember them and benefit from your experience.
